In 2007 there were approximately 130 Alpaca Owners and Breeders in the State of Texas according to the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association (AOBA). Alpacas are considered to be livestock in Texas and qualify for all of the tax benefits that are available to owners and breeders of other forms of livestock. Sales tax is not charged on the sale of livestock in Texas, including Alpacas. Texas has two major Alpaca organizations representing Alpaca owners and breeders, TxOLAN and the State of Texas Alpaca Ranchers (STAR) as well as several local groups of Alpaca Owners such as Central Texas Alpacas. TxOLAN also represents Alpaca owners in the states of Oklahoma, New Mexico and Louisiana and sponsors an annual Alpaca show each February in Fort Worth. Alpacas can also be found at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
